In a letter written in 1921, Rilke wrote: “(…) but what keeps me here is this wonderful Valais.” He was not referring just to the landscape, but also the little hamlets, towns and villages. In addition, the poet’s last resting place is in Raraogne. From the Valais resort of Bouveret on the shores of Lake Geneva via the picturesque winemaking villages of the Lower Valais up the historic town of Leuk with its dome created by Mario Botta, the Valais is filled with exceptional places. Some are as surprising as Monthey, a cultural village, while others as unique as Saint-Pierre-de-Clages, with its 11th century church and octagonal steeple, or still others as original as Visperterminen with the highest vineyards in Europe.
