The modern church in Hérémence caused quite a stir after it was built in the late sixties. Designed by architect Walter Förderer, today the concrete structure represents a significant part in the history of Swiss church architectural history. The modern structure was built next to historical wooden structures.

This sharp contrast is continued at the head of the valley, where the monumental wall of the Grande-Dixence dam appears to harness the elementary power and wild, unpredictable nature of the high mountains. This miracle of construction is at its most awe-inspiring when you make the climb on foot, from the Hotel Ritz at its base, to the summit. However, there is also a cablecar to take you up.
