The Valais is a hiker’s paradise in winter. Its 1000 kilometres of immaculately prepared winter trails invite hikers to leisurely strolls or athletic climbs in an unparalleled setting. With the winter sun as your companion, you can wander through silent snow-covered forests and over magnificent sunny terraces featuring fantastic views. This is as close as you can get to the high peaks and majestic glaciers of the Valais Alps. A steaming cup of schnapps and coffee or hot chocolate welcomes contented hikers in a snug mountain hut at the end of the day.
UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch
This winter hike from Fiescheralp to Bettmeralp and on to Riederalp is among Switzerland’s Valais classics. Hikers enjoy superb panoramic views of the Valais Alps from beginning to end. The Mischabel Group, Matterhorn, Weissmies and other peaks in the range make this walk a truly unforgettable experience. With this majestic backdrop, it is easy to forget that the Aletsch region is itself a natural wonder. The entire region is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The winter hikes are linked together by several pistes and so have merged together to form one giant winter sports arena. Cosy little huts (Beizli) along the hiking trails offer the trip a true culinary delight.
