A hand-picked selection of steep slopes awaits to make even the most adventurous heart beat faster.
Considerable differences in altitude, black or mogul runs – certain ski resorts offer the desired challenge for experienced ski fans. Valais skier Didier Défago, Olympic downhill champion in 2021, has compiled a best-of the most demanding routes in Valais, aimed at skiers with advanced technique and good physical condition.
Le Pas de Chavanette
Renowned as one of the steepest and most difficult runs in the world, the Pas de Chavanette is reserved for experienced skiers: hence its name “the Swiss wall”. Just over 1 km long, with a vertical drop of 400 m with gradients of more than 50%, and moguls up to two metres high after a heavy snowfall, the run demands respect from all. Best, then, to gain plenty of confidence before tackling this legend in the Portes du Soleil ski area, where even the snowcats dare not venture.
Mont-Fort
As the highest point and symbol of the 4 Vallées, at 3,330 metres, the Mont-Fort offers a unique view of the surrounding mountains. This extremely steep, 1,750-long run leads very good skiers with excellent physical condition to the Col des Gentianes 380 metres below. Due to its steep gradient, this run is not mechanically groomed and the less experienced should take the cable car down after admiring the view at the summit.
Galen
The black Galen slope from the Plattjen mountain station to Saas-Fee is a treat for experienced skiers and downhill enthusiasts. Surrounded by 18 4,000-metre peaks with the blue shimmer of glaciers, the run offers a rapid descent into the valley with an exclusive view of the Mischabel massif. It is no coincidence that World Cup races were once held on this 2.3 kilometre-long, 770 m-high slope.
Obere National
Your legs will be severely tested by this relatively steep run, once home to World Cup races. Fully equipped with artificial snowmaking facilities to ensure the best conditions, the black Obere National run leads through precipitous, undulating terrain, with a section through forest. Starting at the top of the Blauherd chairlift, the run finishes at the bottom of the Patrullarve chairlift, after a 3.1 km descent and a vertical drop of nearly 600 m.
Piste du Chamois
Among the vast choice in the Val d’Anniviers, the Piste du Chamois is one of the finest and toughest, running from the highest point in Zinal to the village of Grimentz: 1,300 m of vertical drop over a total length of 4.3 km, with gradients of up to 65%. This black run begins with a very steep section before leading to the edge of the forest. The final stretch follows a forest track with a gentle gradient until the edge of the village of Grimentz, allowing you to catch your breath after the demanding descent.
