The pristine Valais glaciers offer an unparalleled natural spectacle, which is why they have been designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The giant rivers of ice are a wonder of nature, as impressive as they are instructive. Deep, dangerous crevasses, giant moraines and wild glacial creeks illustrate the incredible forces of the ice. This is an incomparable world that waits to be discovered: numerous hikes, routes and guided tours offer terrific views of the glaciers – and insights into their icy secrets.
In winter as in summer, the Mont-Fort is an extremely popular excursion destination. Everyone can reach the summit thanks to the lift system. In fact, from this incredible view point the most beautiful alpine mountains, from the Matterhorn to the Mont-Blanc, reveal themselves before you. The Mont-Fort is one of the best view points in the Alps, which can be reached effortlessly.
The cable car from Gentianes to Mont-Fort crosses the Tortin Glacier and in winter you can ski down on a black slope which leads over the glacier. The two main characteristics of the Mont-Fort – Gentianes – Tortin ski run are steepness of its slope and the altitude of its summit (3330m). As opposed to most ski runs, the Mont-Fort one is not prepared mechanically. The slope is too steep to allow this. The preparation is limited to securing the area around the slope after each snowfall. This particularity makes this slope the only one of its kind.
