The Valais is home to some of the most impressive gorges, caves and grottos in the Alps. Whether by suspended bridge, gallery or boat, exploring the dark grottos and deep gorges of the Valais is an absolutely thrilling experience. This unique and magical world was shaped over millions of years by the immense forces of nature. And not only are the gorges and grottos spectacular in themselves – the story of their discovery has fascinated visitors for decades.
The Gondo Gorge & military fortress
The hike to the Gondo Gorge begins at Gabi/Gstei on the Simplon Road. The Stockalperweg once led past this area. Shortly after the limekiln hikers cross the modern granite bridge to visit the exhibition dedicated to four epochs of traffic history on the Simplon in the “Alte Kaserne” (“Old Barracks”). The hiking trail runs underground through the military fortress “Fort Gondo”. A guided tour of the fortress can be arranged. After crossing the Doveria (Pont des Sapins) you will reach your destination in Godo, whose centre was rebuilt after the natural disaster in 2000.
