St-Maurice

Following the martyrdom of Saint-Maurice at the end of the third century, the Celtic village of Acaunus becomes an important place for pilgrimage on the via Francigena connecting Canterbury to Rome. The Abbey of Saint-Maurice was founded in 515 by Sigismond, king of the Burgondes, and is one of Switzerland’s first monasteries. It immediately became an important site and helped to shape the region’s history. It remains of central spiritual importance today. St-Maurice offers visitors the chance to discover new dimensions: a future that grows out of the past.
