Castles & fortresses
Well-preserved palaces, castles and fortresses are evidence of the strategic importance and economic significance of the Valais: from the Middle Ages, when the palaces and castles served to control trade routes through the Alps, to the Second World War, when Switzerland courageously defended itself in its Alpine redoubt. The commanding structures make the exciting history of Switzerland and the Valais come alive. Every castle and fortresse of the Valais have a lot to offer.
Castle church and Rainer Maria Rilke’s Tomb
Rainer Maria Rilke himself chose his final resting place in this mystical place at the foot of the castle church. The architect Ulrich Ruffiner built the St. Romanus castle church between 1510 and 1517, which includes the old defence tower from the 12th century. The castle church is situated at the beginning of a rock jutting out into the valley. The old rectory houses today the castle's museum.
