Ovens in the Val d’Hérens
Visit the old ovens where the villagers used to bake their bread together. Ingenious stone structures, which where in joint possession of families and where used until the Second Word War. With resource rationing and the arrival of bakers in the valley, the baking houses with their ovens were closed. When you meet the older inhabitants in the village, ask about the wonderful story of these ovens. It is the whole story of sharing, of living in a community, the story of the people here – that wasn’t always easy…
