ViaCook - First conducted tour of Switzerland
A pioneering visit to Switzerland was organised by the British package tour pioneer Thomas Cook.
He brought his first group of British visitors here in 1863. They travelled from Geneva to the Valais, visited the attractions of the Bernese Oberland, marvelled at the sunrise from the Rigi and then returned home by train from Lucerne. Since then travelling along the ViaCook has become somewhat more comfortable, but it is still a great experience – on foot, by ship and by train.
