The Gondo Gorge & military fortress

The hike to the Gondo Gorge begins at Gabi/Gstei on the Simplon Road. The Stockalperweg, an ancient muleteer track, is also found here. Shortly after the limekiln you will cross the modern granite bridge to visit the exhibition dedicated to four epochs of traffic history on the Simplon in the “Alte Kaserne” (“Old Barracks”).

The hiking trail runs underground through the military fortress “Fort Gondo”. A guided tour of the fortress can be arranged. After crossing the Doveria (Pont des Sapins) you will reach your destination in Godo, whose center was rebuilt after the natural disaster in the year 2000.
